Every June 27 sweet tooths everywhere have cause to celebrate – it’s Ice Cream Cake Day! A mere coincidence with the arrival of the northern summer? I think not, and even if it were, honestly, any pretext is a good one to cool off with a delicious dessert in this infernal city heat.
If you’ve found yourself suffering from these recent high temperatures or if you just need a little treat to keep you going, here are five spots to find the best ice cream cakes in CDMX, offering fun flavors like Oreo or lemon and even more exotic ones like campechana de Coahuila or orange and mint.

“French style ice cream with Mexican ingredients.” Everything is homemade, from the cones (for us, the best in CDMX) to the jams. Their vacherin cakes are a combination of two flavors (which change every season) and a crunchy meringue. This season don’t miss the yogurt ice cream, honey cookie, or passion fruit sorbet.

Frody

At this classic chilango ice cream parlor, the ice cream cake is better known as “barra helada” (ice cream bar). The menu includes Oreo, lemon, blackberry and cheese, bunny chocolate, and Ferrero Rocher flavors, among others. To beat the heat, try the Nutella cream cheese ice cream pie or a red frappé.

Cuerno

One of Polanco’s favorite spots has a secret that few know about – the pastel campechana. This dessert, originally from the northeastern part of Mexico, is made with vanilla ice cream and campechana de Coahuila (a sweet bread made with puff pastry), topped with cajeta and nuts. And if you want to try other regional flavors, we recommend ordering the mostachón with peanut butter ice cream.

Dairy Queen

A little predictable? Maybe, but we’re not going to deny that, for a mainstream establishment, Dairy Queen cakes are good. Our favorite, without a doubt, is Oreo. The strawberry cheesecake is also a winner. And let’s be honest, a chain comes in handy when you need a tasty cake on the fly. A fast, reliable, and delicious bet!

Pastelati

If you’re looking for something a cut above Dairy Queen in terms of taste-price ratio and the other recommendations haven’t convinced you, then Pastelati is the way to go. Located in the Del Valle neighborhood, you can find their famous “harlequin” made from chocolate ice cream, orange and mint ice cream, or the raspberry ice cream cake. This dessert serves 8-10.
